About This Game

WHAT IS IT?
Dark, disturbing, unsettling - Beckett is a powerful narrative adventure game that gets under your skin and makes you question everything about yourself and the very nature of reality.

The game is a single-player, point-and-click style experience that lasts around 3 hours. But it will be in your head for a long time after.

WHY WE MADE IT
We made Beckett as a story that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of literature, theatre and independent world cinema. It won the Games category in the 2018 BAFTA Scotland awards, made various game-of-the-year lists (2018) and was made part of V&A Dundee's permanent gallery collection.

You could call it a psychological horror. You could call it an anti-love story. You could call it a surrealist nightmare. Beckett is a disturbing, unique experience that will make you question what it is to exist.

The game puts reality under the spotlight, drawing you into a missing person's case set in a dark and unforgiving world. Our main character, Beckett, morns the loss of his wife - she was everything to him, but time has passed and life has lost meaning. Then there's the City, which plays with Beckett like cat with a baby bird, making him act against his will. You must take control, explore, navigate, interact, talk, defy... we're all memories waiting to happen, we're all memories waiting to fade.

The Secret Experiment has created a game that comes in from the left field, has gameplay that reminds me of Myst (remember that!?) Also looks like David Carson had a hand in the graphics. Abstract, dark and seriously different from much of what's around today! Nicely done guys!. Beckett is a one-of-a-kind point and click game that has presented the ugliness of the world in the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing way. From the coughs and laughters weaving through the dialogues, to the jarring disruptions in gameplay with text, distortions and photography, Beckett offers the player a chance to reflect on the destruction of their own lives, and find some beauty in them. This is by no means for the average gamer, but if you find yourself alone at night, with a cold wind outside and a cup of tea by your side, immerse yourself in the poetry of Beckett.

Recommended reading: "On Ugliness" by Umberto Eco.. Check out my video at 2:25 for a brief overview of Beckett

https://youtu.be/UTIO5cB90hE. Feels like an art exhibition than a game. Very unique narrative with interesting characters that makes you question the concept of existance. What makes uo exist? What is it to exist? What defines our personhood?

Rather short but longer does not always mean better.. For those seeking a totally different and very powerful video game experience, I would highly recommend Beckett. It is a playable work of art and stands in a genre all its own. Read my full review at JustAdventure. [justadventure.com]. 7.5/10

Beckett is a bit of a challenge to review. If you read the description of the game and watch the trailer and feel that you might like it, then I think my score makes sense. However, it's certainly not a game for everyone. The name Beckett seems to be a reference to the postmodern author Samuel Beckett, who wrote the play "Waiting for Godot." There seem to be some overlapping themes between the work of the author and that of developer The Secret Experiment.

You play as Beckett, an old detective, in what appears to be a totalitarian world. Beckett's existence only seems tolerated as long as he performs his detective work. Once this work is complete, who knows? The world itself is pretty captivating: there are AI psychiatrists, seedy bars, a strange absurdist theatre, and a market where the vendors are represented by old coins. In addition, bugs seem to play a large role in the game. I was unclear of whether the bugs were sentient, used as food, used as surveillance equipment, or all three. It could be that bugs represent unsavory characters, food, or actions. They certainly reinforce what a disgusting world Beckett inhabits.

Much of the game is walking from place to place, interacting with objects and people, using a top down viewpoint. Beckett and other characters in each scene are represented by an icon that typically reflects the character's role or temperament. It's not tremendously engaging, but I was always interested in exploring more of this dark world.

Although the game can likely be interpreted many ways, I interpreted it as a tale of an extremely depressed man. Since Beckett lost his wife, he doesn't seem to have any interest in anything. He feels that he's lost something vital that is irretrievable. He's slowly aging and decaying. However, the game represents depression better than almost anything else I've played, perhaps with the exception of Silent Hill 2. Both Beckett and the boy he attempts to find have no interest in the present moment. Beckett seems to reside solely in the past, sometimes vividly recalling memories while you play. The boy seems to be infatuated with a woman and only exists for a possible future with her.

As the game description notes, it is "unlike anything you will ever play." I have to agree, and I've played quite a few games.. Reviewing because I want this game to be better known. I love the aesthetic especially - too often games go for a very literal representation, even when they stray into the bizarre. Beckett's approach of displaying characters as various objects is a clever way of representing them, and giving each character an audio hook instead of a voice adds to their characters more than most professional voice acting could.

I can't really add anything that isn't covered in the excellent Rock, Paper, Shotgun review, so just go read that if you want in-depth coverage.. First of all, cards on the table. I am the face of Beckett. I am am also related to the developer.
    Nevertheless .
How wonderful (in the true sense of the word) was it to be immersed for four hours in a world that evokes the literature, cinema and media of the 20th century’s avant-garde and to be guided through this world by a captivating narrative. If this sounds a bit pretentious , then Beckett is just a weird, wonderful and unique game playing experience that has to be experienced by anyone who loves to go somewhere a little dangerous.
The ease of interactivity lets you glide through the narrative making it akin to reading a book, while the prose is presented within visual backdrops that allow you to read and digest the meaning of this bleak and thoughtful surreal world that is called BECKETT…… The synthesis of the sound, words, moving images and gameplay combine and gave an immersive experience unlike any other. More please….

    Physical-Remix:
This beautifully unusual physical-remix of Beckett by its creator, Simon Meek. is released next week. The set of 55 reality shaping storycards were exclusively made for V&A Dundee, who also selected the videogame to form part of their permanent collection. We wanted to share this, as we think it's pretty cool.

    . Vinyl 2nd Edition:
We're excited to tell you that due to popular demand and sell-out of Beckett's first vinyl imprint, the order is in for the 2nd (limited) edition. This time we're printing on heavyweight grey/silver vinyl, with etching and music, white case and exclusive sticker-art. You'll be able to pick one up via V&A Dundee before the end of the month, or - if you're not in the area - email us: [email protected]. Ltd Edition Etched Record:
Hi everyone, we're looking to give away 5 very-limited-edition 7" etched vinyl records (only available from the V&A Musuem later this year).

The A-side is the track that was played on BBC6 Music - a remix of some of the memory sections in Beckett. The B-side is an original etching of the Beckett character piece.

We'd like to award these to player with the best screenshots (based on likes) that we collected over the next 10 days. We're sure you'll find some bizarre and beautiful shots in there :)

    Hope you're enjoying Beckett.

Simon. The Words in Your Head:
Beckett questions what it is to exist.

It is a dark exploration of the space in our heads.

It is an unsettling journey through the unknown in search of meaning.

Beckett is an enquiry and a conversation. So let's start one.

    . Beckett for OSX:
We've been working hard getting Beckett ready to exist on Mac. And, as of today, we're please to announce that it does!

As an added extra, this means that anyone running Windows on a 16:10 monitor can run Becket in this format if they wish.

We've also upped the binaural sound content, so it feels even more alive. And there's a few visual extras in there for anyone returning to the game - we'll let you discover them :)

Thanks again for all your support. We'll leave you to the game now, do let us know what you make of it...
